European "hot spots"

Regions where the link between abnormal physical development and air pollution has been established:

POLAND. Krakow - decrease in lung functions among men. This is related to the influence of acid rains, which are caused by sulphur and introgen oxides thrown into the air. Katowitza - 20% decrease in the average level of hemoglobine among mothers and children.

CZECH REPUBLIC. Decrease in the average weight of the newborn in the regions wit the highest levels of dust and sulphur dioxide. Central Bohemia - high number of children who are "too small" for their ages in the regions of extraction of raw materials.

Regions where nitrates are very commonly found in drinking water. This is the cause of methemohlobinemia. Methemohlobinemia is a form of chemical asphycsia, which as a result of the influence of nitrates damages the property of blood designed to carry oxygen.

Countries where this problem is really "hot" include:

SLOVAK REPUBLIC, HUNGARY, BOLGARIA, BELARUS, LITVA, ROMANIA.

Regions where there are problems with arsenic:

SLOVAK REPUBLIC. Ziar and Hronom - high levels of skin cancer and deafness among children living in the parts of the cities where winds blow from the aluminium plant.

HUNGARY. Behesh Count - high levels of arsenic in water supply system. There are proofs of skin and stomach diseases among children and also high probability of dead births.

ROMANIA. Regions Arad-Lipora, Ineu - terrtories immediately adjacent to the Hungarian Behesh Count. Here high levels of blood cancer were registered.

Regions with other problems:

POLAND. Problems related to fluorosys, near the aluminium industry plants. Turov, Silese - high levels of methemohlobilemia near power plants using lingites.

LATVIA. Brotsenai. - large scale influence of asbestos on people. Liepaia - lots of problems related to the influence of electric magnetic radiation of radio locator stations.

ROMANIA. Suchava - neurosis sympotoms among children influenced by carbon bisulphide.

RUSSIA. (European part). Kaliningrad, Novgorod, Lipetsk, Syktyvkar, Kandalaksha, Cherepovets - high levels of benzapilen concentration in the atmosphere.

UKRAINE. Cancer related diseases in three regions of Ukraine polluted as a result of the accident at Chernobyl.
